Difficulty: Easy
Valentine’s Day you either love it or you hate it. Although I have to say I’m fairly indifferent towards the holiday. My birthday is 2 days after, so for me a birthday trumps Valentine’s Day. My husband and I don’t do much to celebrate Valentine’s Day other than exchange cards and maybe have a chocolatey dessert after dinner.
For my kids I like to put up a few decorations to make the house look a bit more festive. On valentine’s Day I give them red and pink heart shaped food and they think that is so fun. If you are the type that enjoys the holiday you probably like to do crafts and put up decorations and don’t forget all the conversation hearts.
I have 2 easy décor projects that you can put together with a few supplies from Dollar Tree. They don’t take a lot of time and cost a total of $6 to make. Yes you could just buy some Valentine décor from Dollar Tree, but the decorations there are very over the top. If you want something a little more understated you can use a few things from around the store to create your own decorations.
Check out the supply list below, you may have some items in your crafts stash, then head to Dollar Tree to pick up the rest. Then take a about an hour to put together both decorations or just a few minutes to put together one.
Supplies:
Decoration #1
Valentine Gift Bag (8”x10.5” size)
8×10 Picture Frame
Decoration #2
11×14 Picture Frame
Burlap Ribbon
River Rocks
Wall Decal (hearts or “love” on it)
Scissors
Glue Gun and glue sticks
Decoration #1
Cut the front off the gift bag using the creases as your cutting line.
Once the front has been removed flip it over and remove the handle. Gently pull the paper that is holding the handle on. If the handle is fabric it will be more easily removed.
Take the photo insert from the frame and lay it over the front of the bag lining up the sides and bottom. Draw a cutting line on the bag front with the edge of the photo insert as your guide.
Cut along the line that you just drew. Now the bag front is the perfect size for the frame. Place the bag front into the frame and reattach the back of the frame. Hang your framed art on the wall or place the frame on a table or book shelf.
Decoration #2
Take the back off the frame and remove the glass and photo insert. If the back of the photo insert is white you can use that for your project or cut a piece of poster board to fit.
Draw a heart in the middle of the paper, making sure it is centered and leaving room at the top and bottom of the paper for the burlap ribbon. You can draw this free hand or create a template with the old fold a piece of paper in half and draw half a heart trick.
After you have drawn the heart cut 2 lengths of ribbon the width of the top and bottom of the paper.Glue the ribbon in place at the top and bottom of the paper. You can use the hot glue or craft glue.
Then glue the paper to the glass around the edges. Take the glass and place it back into the frame and reattach the back.
Flip the frame over and add the wall decal to the middle of the heart. I used the word love, but your decal may be a picture or another word. Make sure to center the decal, but because it’s a wall decal it is easily re-positioned.
Take the river rocks and lay them out over the edge of the heart. Make sure to lay the rocks all the way around to determine the best placement and make sure the pencil line is covered. Then glue the rocks in place.
Find a place to put the framed art. The 11×14 frames at Dollar Tree only have wall hangers on the back, so you can hang it on the wall or prop against the wall on a shelf. I placed mine on my kitchen shelves, because it works with my decor and took the place of a Christmas tree plate.
For a few bucks and a few minutes you have some Valentine’s Day decorations to brighten up your home.
