Dollar Tree Valentine’s Day Wreath

Difficulty: Beginner

When different holidays roll around I like to decorate to get everyone in our house excited about the holiday. Buying decorations for every holiday can get expensive, so in my quest to live frugally I will a lot of times make decorations.

Enter the Dollar Tree

The Dollar Tree is one of my favorite places to shop. I’m usually there once a week and always find a great deal. Sometimes I even find great deals on things that I didn’t even know that I needed!

I could have simply bought some valentine’s day decorations from the Dollar Tree, but I decided that I wanted a wreath for our front door and there were no wreaths. No worries, I would simply make one.

I spent $3 on a wreath form, a package of foam hearts and red ribbon. I stumbled upon the pink feathers in my craft supplies and decided to use those too. They were purchased at Dollar Tree as well, but for another project, so I didn’t count that in my total. For $3 and 15 minutes I got a decoration for my door. That’s a good deal! If you need to buy the feathers it will be $4 total for a wreath, but still a great deal.

If you want to make this wreath head to your local Dollar Tree to pick up your supplies and then head back here to learn how.

Supplies:

Wire Wreath Form

Package of Red and Pink Foam Hearts

1 Roll of Wide Red Ribbon

1 Package of Pink or Red Feathers

Hot Glue Gun (not available at Dollar Tree, pick one up for less than $5 at a local craft store)

Glue Sticks for glue gun

Scrap paper or fabric

Take scrap paper or fabric and glue to the back of the wreath form. Makes the back of the wreath look a little bit neater. Our front door has a window in the middle, so we see the back of any wreath from inside our house. Skip this step if you don’t care about the way the back looks. Measure how long you need the ribbon to be to hang the wreath on your door and cut the ribbon twice the length of that measurement. Feed the ribbon through the top space on the wreath form, match the ends of ribbon together. Tie a knot at the end of the ribbon to create a loop to hang from a hook or nail.

Take feathers and glue to the outer most wire on the wreath form working all the way around. Then repeat with the inner most wire. Adding the feathers to my wreath was an afterthought, so I didn’t add them until after I glued the hearts on. Definitely harder the way I did it. Once the feathers are attached glue on your hearts alternating between red and pink. Make sure to test your lay out and spacing before you start gluing or you could end up with two of the same color next to each other when you end. You also want to make sure that the spacing stays fairly even as you go, so testing it out is necessary. Once all of the hearts have been glued on pull off all the spider webs of hot glue and then hang it on your door.

Though I laid out my hearts prior to gluing my spacing was a little off between the top and bottom, oh well.

I wasn’t kidding when I said that this was a quick craft! Even if you aren’t super crafty you can put this together pretty quickly. Bear in mind that the quicker you work the more likely you are to burn your fingers with hot glue. Not much of an issue for me because I’m pretty sure I’ve burned off my finger prints over the years using a hot glue gun. If you don’t have asbestos fingers use caution and work a little slower.

Happy Crafting!
